What our children say

What our children say

'When I went into foster care, I didn’t know what was happening. Everything had changed and I was scared about what was going to happen. I’m not sure if I would have been able to get through it without the help of my foster carers. They talked to me and let me let out the feelings I had been holding back for years just because there was no one to talk to. I felt like I was actually being taken care of properly for the first time in my life; it was an amazing feeling.

I feel like I am in the best and safest place that I have been for 14 years. I feel like I have a proper family now and that people really care about me. When things happen at school, and things aren’t going well all round, I feel like I can talk to my foster carer about anything. They have helped me through so many bad times, and I would not wish for a different life now because I feel like this is finally where I belong.'

'When I first lived with foster carers I found it hard being away from my family. I was really nervous about living in another family’s home.

Whilst being with foster parents I became more settled and learnt a lot more about myself. I also got to see new places and I built a good relationship with my carer. I always had my carer to talk to when I was finding things hard.

I’ve got more confidence from the support I got from my carers and I’ve become more able to overcome some of my anxieties.

The best thing for me was having someone to care about me and support me to do the things I want to and because of being with foster parents I’ve been able to build a better relationship with my family.'

'I was pleased to move into my friend’s house and glad that Children’s Services chose her parents to be my permanent carers. Since being in foster care my life has changed, I’m more calm and stable. I feel safe and secure.

When I lived at home with my parents I was naughty and went off the rails, now with my carers they set boundaries and I listen more and my relationship with my parents has improved.

I am happy living with my best friend and her family though would like more freedom like staying over at friends without having to ask a social worker.'

'Being a child placed into care can be a disturbing experience. Many people will talk to me, many will ask me questions, many will bug me, but many will also care for me. Foster Parents are a safe haven - providing me with the help and support every child needs and deserves.'
