Adoption allowances

Some parents who have adopted a child or children are entitled to adoption allowances

  • Criteria includes a child being placed with a sibling or having special needs which require extra expenditure as a result of illness, disability, emotional or behavioural difficulties
  • An adoption allowance can be paid until the adopted child reaches the age of 18, however most placing authorities pay allowances for a defined period initially and then review whether or not an allowance will continue to be paid
  • All adoption allowances are means tested allowances and will be dependent on the financial means of the adoptive parents
